Investing in New Zealand

New Zealand's clean, green, great country continues to be discovered. Our four million people are renowned for embracing the rest of the world, one reason why two million tourists a year visit our timeless country.

People

Predominately English speaking, New Zealander's have a great love for outdoor pursuits and welcome anyone to their country with their friendly and inviting manner, often for their much loved and supported Rugby, Cricket and Netball each a culture in their own right. Also renowned for activities from skiing to sailing, climbing to bungy jumping!

Economy

Our good fiscal policies and a stable democracy means a stable currency and good international credit rating. We boast the lowest unemployment in the OECD. Our energy is sourced from hydro electricity, gas and petroleum reserves. We have good telecommunications, road infrastructure, and investment in health services. We have the fourth largest coastline in the world, supporting our fisheries pursuits and water sports, most recently, the America's Cup.

Historically we have been major exporter of agricultural produce but increasingly we export our intellectual property in new technologies across many sectors. We have plentiful food and wine production, and a low cost of living which results in a great lifestyle.

Our government welcomes foreign investment and new migrants.

Tax advantages in New Zealand
1. No stamp duty on transactions
2. No inheritance tax
3. Generally no broad capital gains tax
4. Often there is no tax on land transactions

Real estate

New Zealand property has proven a stable and excellent long term investment over the last 30 years.

For every dollar invested in the residential housing market in New Zealand in 1965, the value in 1997 was $20.92. In other words, over a 32 year period the residential property increased in value an average of just under 10% compounding every year.

By comparison, the Stock Exchange (SE40) index indicated returns during this 32 year period of just over 7% compounding per annum (almost 3% behind the residential investment).

Location

New Zealand, made up of two main islands is located in the Southern Hemisphere close to our neighbour Australia.

We have direct flights to much of Asia, the USA and several European destinations including London which makes New Zealand highly accessible.

New Zealand has stable weather patterns with oceanic temperatures. Climate varies from warm subtropical in the far north, to cool temperate climates in the far south. The far south boasts alpine conditions in the mountainous areas during the winter months from June-August and hot, dry summers during the months December to February.

Known for its clean green image, the country's low pollution means the air is some of the cleanest on the planet and you can still drink clean water direct from the streams in most mountainous areas.
